AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Chicago women's tennis team earned their third top-25 win in four days with a 7-0 sweep of #14 Tufts. The win is the first-ever win over Tufts by UChicago, and it snaps an undefeated season for the Jumbos who came in at 9-0 on the year.
The Maroons were able to sweep all three doubles matches to kick off the match in a tight contest at all three positions. The #1 doubles duo of
Oliwia Mikos and
Sylwia Mikos earned the first win with a 6-4 victory. The #2 doubles team of
Shianna Guo and
Lauren Khou followed suit with a 7-5 win thanks to a huge late break of serve. Finally,
Erica Ekstrand and
Charlotte Klein completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at the #3 position.
After three tight matches in doubles, UChicago stepped on the gas pedal and dominated the singles matches.
Sylwia Mikos cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at #1, and
Erica Ekstrand followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #2. The Maroons didn't take long to pick up points four and five as
Isabelle Chong won 6-2, 6-3 at #4 singles and
Oliwia Mikos picked up her second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #6 singles.
At #3 singles,
Sarena Biria rolled through the first set, winning 6-2, but the second set was another story as she went back and forth with Rachel Cranley to a 5-5 set. However, Biria added a big break of serve late in the set to hold on for the straight-set victory. The final match on the court was at #5 singles as
Brooke Pedersen won a pair of tight sets for the 6-4, 7-5 victory to complete the 7-0 sweep of the Jumbos.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 13-1 on the season and stretch their win streak to eight consecutive matches. They will return to the court on Tuesday, March 25, at 3 PM CT as they host the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs for their first home match at the Stagg Tennis Courts of the season.
