CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago softball team picked up their first top-25 win of the season on Friday afternoon with a 4-3 win over #18 Emory in the opening game of the series on a walk-off home run by
Maya Martinez.
The Eagles jumped on the board early with three unearned runs in the first three innings. An error, sacrifice bunt, passed ball, and single brought home the first run of the game in the opening frame. Then, in the third, Emory added two more on a two-out, two-run home run following a UChicago error.
However, the Maroons were not down and out as they continued to fight. After leaving five base runners stranded in the first two innings,
Maya Martinez ripped a two-out double over the third baseman's head to bring home
Matilda Nelson for the opening UChicago run of the game. Then, in the fifth inning, the Maroons cut the lead to one on an RBI single up the middle by
Audrey Hui to make it a 3-2 ball game.
The sixth inning brought a tie ball game for UChicago as
Natalie Antin ripped a ball off the wall in the right-center gap to bring home
Sedona Ding and level the score line. Then, on the second pitch of the bottom of the seventh inning,
Maya Martinez became the hero with a walk-off home run deep over the center field fence to give the Maroons the 4-3 victory. She would allow just three total hits and three unearned runs while striking out seven in the win.
Paige Heffke was unbelievable on the mound as she retired 13 consecutive batters to close out the game, not allowing a baserunner to reach after the third inning. Martinez led the offense with a 3-4 day including an RBI double and the walk-off home run.
Natalie Antin and
Sedona Ding also added multi-hit games for the Maroons as the top three batters in the UChicago order combined to go 4-7 at the plate, reaching base in 7 of their 11 at bats.
The Maroons improve to 13-12 on the season and 2-5 in the UAA with the win. The team returns to their home field on Saturday at 12 PM CT and 2 PM CT for a doubleheader against the Eagles to close out the series.
