CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's tennis team completed the doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon in their first home matches at the Stagg Tennis Courts. The Maroons defeated Grinnell 7-0 and Holy Cross (IN) 5-2.
The Maroons swept all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead over Grinnell.
Andrei Leonov and
Pat Otero won 6-1 at #1 doubles,
Alexander Ekstrand and
Derek Hsieh won 6-3 at #2 doubles, and
Michael Choi and
Jacob Lowen won 6-1 at #3 doubles.
In singles play, UChicago continued to roll with a 6-0, 6-0 bagel win by
Matthew Liew at #5 singles.
Ajer Sher also added a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4 singles to extend the lead to 3-0, and
Alexander Ekstrand capped off the win with the fourth point in a 6-2, 6-2 lead at #1 singles.
Derek Hsieh,
Michael Choi, and
Jack Wong all added wins to complete the 7-0 sweep in the opening match of the day.
In the second match of the day, UChicago and Holy Cross opened with three battles in doubles play. Hsieh and Ekstrand held on for the 7-5 win at #2 doubles, and Choi and Wong also picked up a 7-5 win at #3 doubles. In the #1 doubles match, the duo of Leonov and Otero sent the match to a tiebreak and held on for a 7-6(7-5) to complete the doubles sweep.
Holy Cross leveled the match with a win at #1 singles, but
Matthew Liew,
Pat Otero, and
Andrei Leonov dominated at the bottom of the UChicago lineup with straight set wins, losing just 12 total games, to clinch the victory.Â
Michael Choi also added a win at #2 singles to complete the 5-2 win for the Maroons.
With the wins, UChicago improves to 18-2 on the season. The Maroons return to their home courts on Saturday, April 19 as they take on UW-Whitewater at 11 AM CT.
