ATLANTA, Ga. -- The University of Chicago baseball team dropped the final game of the four-game series with Emory on Sunday afternoon with an 11-7 loss to the Eagles.
Emory jumped in front with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and despite adding a run back with an RBI single by
Brady Miller, the Eagles scored six in the second to take a 10-1 advantage through just two inning of play.
After that point, the UChicago bullpen took over the game as they went five consecutive innings without allowing Emory to add any more runs to their lead.
Uday Narottam was lights out with 4.2 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just one total hit in the game.
Landon Brice also added 1.1 innings in relief with just one earned run allowed to close out the game.
The Maroons offense finally got going in the fifth inning as
Nathan Bae worked a two-out walk and
Erik Rindner roped a two-run home run over the left field wall. Then, following a single by
Michael Gladden,
Jackson Slipock added the second home run of the inning to cut the lead to 10-5.
In the seventh inning, UChicago was able to cut the lead to three. Following a double by
Erik Rindner and a single by
Michael Gladden,
Jackson Slipock brought in a run on a groundout and
Max Wiesner added a two-run double to cut the lead to 10-7. However, after six straight runs, the Sunday afternoon comeback fell short with an 11-7 loss to split the series.
With the loss, the Maroons fall to 23-11 on the season and 10-6 in the UAA, just 1.5 games back of the top spot in the conference. The team returns to action on Monday evening at 6 PM CT as they battle Illinois Tech in the Southside Showdown at Rate Field, the home of the Chicago White Sox.
