CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago softball team came up just short in both games of their mid-week doubleheader at #18 UW-Whitewater.
The Maroons scored first in game one of the doubleheader as
Sedona Ding and
Madeline Murphy each worked walks to start the game. After a
Natalie Antin single to load the bases,
Audrey Hui brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, UChicago was able to double the lead with a pair of two-out hits as
Laila Sims doubled and
Sedona Ding brought her home for a 2-0 lead. UW-Whitewater answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run to level the scoreline, and the Warhawks retook the lead in the third with a 3-2 lead.
The Maroons put multiple runners on base in both the third and fifth innings, but they were unable to push the tying run across as they fell 4-2.
In the second game of the day, the Maroons once again brought the first runner of the game across home plate as
Natalie Antin ripped a single into right field to bring home
Sedona Ding for a 1-0 lead. However, the Warhawks came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning on another home run.
After that inning,
Nicole Wong settled down and pitched beautifully over the next three innings, keeping UW-Whitewater off the scoreboard. The Maroons were able to level the score once again in the sixth inning with a pair of runs. With one on and two outs,
Audrey Hui singled and
Maya Martinez brought in both runs on a double into the left-center gap. However, the comeback attempt would be halted in the bottom of the sixth as the Warhawks ripped a pair of two-out doubles to retake the lead and the 6-3 victory.
Natalie Antin,
Maya Martinez, and
Sedona Ding led the offensive attached with three hits each, and Ding scored three of the five UChicago runs in the doubleheader.
With the losses, the Maroons fall to 15-17 on the season. The team will have the weekend off before traveling to Kenosh, Wisconsin to battle Carthage on Tuesday, April 29.
