#1 Women's Tennis Wins Thriller Over #10 WashU; Advances to 7th Consecutive UAA Championship

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The University of Chicago women's tennis team brought home a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over #10 WashU to advance to the UAA Championship match for the seventh consecutive tournament. The Maroons will play for their fourth consecutive UAA title at 8:30 AM ET on Saturday against #2 Emory.

WashU opened the match with the immediate advantage as they took control in all three doubles matches. The Bears were able to pull away to win both the #2 doubles and #3 doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead.

In singles play, the Bears were able to double their lead with a win at #4 singles, but UChicago battled right back with two wins of their own at the bottom of the lineup. Clara Zou brought home a 6-1, 6-3 win at #5 singles, and Brooke Pedersen added a 6-1, 6-4 win at #6 singles to level the score at two.

After WashU grabbed the win at #3 singles, the Maroons were down to their final life, needing victories at both #1 and #2 singles to complete the comeback. Sylwia Mikos continued her outstanding play with a 6-3, 6-4 win at #2 singles to level the score at three with a win over the #10 singles player in the country.

In the #1 singles match, the entire match was left in the balance between Erica Ekstrand, the #6 singles player in NCAA DIII, and Eleanor Archer, the #24 singles player in NCAA DIII. After Ekstrand won the first set 6-4, Archer came right back to win the second set 6-2 to bring the deciding match to a deciding set. In the third set Archer picked up a big break of serve to go up 4-2, but Ekstrand battled right back and earned a break of serve of her own to level the set at four. Ekstrand faced a pair of break points at 4-4, but she was able to fight off both points and take a 5-4 lead in the final set. Ekstrand rode her newly gained momentum to a quick 40-0 lead to give herself four match points, and she would clinch the match victory with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory in a match that lasted over three hours.

With the win, the Maroons improve to 19-1 on the season and advance to the UAA Championship match for the seventh consecutive season. UChicago will battle #2 Emory at 8:30 AM ET on Saturday morning in a rematch of a regular season match earlier this year that the Maroons won 4-3 in Atlanta.
