Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

#4 UChicago Falls to #6 Case Western Reserve in UAA Title Match

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The No. 4 University of Chicago men's tennis team came up short in its bid for a second straight UAA Championship, falling 4–1 to No. 6 Case Western Reserve in Sunday's conference title match at Sanlando Park.

The Maroons (21–3) struck first in doubles, as Andrei Leonov and Pat Otero set the tone with a hard-fought 7–5 win at No. 1 doubles. However, Case answered with wins on courts two and three to take the crucial doubles point and an early 1–0 lead.

Otero continued his strong day in singles, delivering UChicago's lone point with a commanding 6–1, 6–2 victory at the No. 6 spot. But despite several tight matches, the Spartans proved too much in the top half of the lineup. Case secured the team win with victories at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 singles.

At No. 5, Matthew Liew battled back to force a second-set tiebreak but ultimately fell 6–2, 7–6 (7–5). Derek Hsieh and Alexander Ekstrand also pushed their opponents but couldn't find the edge in straight-set defeats.

UChicago was still alive on two courts when the match was clinched. Emil Grantcharov had split sets at No. 2 singles and was locked in a third when play was halted, and Ajer Sher was mid-comeback on court four.

Despite the loss, the Maroons will now look ahead to the NCAA postseason, where they remain a strong contender for a deep run.
