WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The University of Chicago men's tennis team took down Grinnell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to reach their 10th consecutive Regional Championship match.
The Maroons took an early lead in the match in doubles play as they cruised to a 1-0 lead.
Alexander Ekstrand and
Derek Hsieh brought home a 6-0 win in the #2 doubles match, and
Michael Choi and
Jack Wong combined to clinch the doubles point with a 6-1 win at #3 doubles.
Emil Grantcharov doubled the UChicago lead in the first singles match of the day as he won 6-1, 6-0 at the #1 singles position. Moments later,
Michael Choi added a 6-2, 6-0 win at #4 singles in his first match since April 13. Finally,
Alexander Ekstrand earned the clinching point for the Maroons at #2 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Derek Hsieh,
Ajer Sher, and
Matthew Liew all won the first set for UChicago prior to the match being clinched.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 22-3 on the season. The team will return to action on Sunday at 12 PM CT as they take on the winner of #29 UW-Whitewater and #30 Gustavus Adolphus in the Regional Championship match.
