SAINT PETER, Minn. -- The University of Chicago baseball team faced a rude welcome to the Big Dance with a 34-8 loss in their postseason debut.
In a brutal weather day with spitting rain and wind up to 30 miles per hour, the Maroons got their maiden tournament started with a bang with a double into the left-center gap by
Erik Rindner and an RBI single by
Michael Gladden to take an early 1-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the first inning, the onslaught of the UW-Oshkosh bats started as they plated 10 runs in the inning.
The Maroons strung together three consecutive singles by
Jack Sharp,
Richard Lu, and
Braden Jirovec in second inning as they looked to climb back into the contest. Then,
Michael Gladden roped a two-out, three-run home run to cut the lead in half at 10-5.
After a pair of scoreless innings by
Hayden Leiderman, UChicago had another chance in the fourth inning to cut into the deficit. After back-to-back singles by
Richard Lu and
Braden Jirovec with no outs, but the Maroons would leave both runners on base.
From that point on, it would be all Titans as the Maroons fell in the NCAA Tournament opener.
With the loss, the Maroons fall to 26-15 on the season. The Maroons will return to action on Saturday at 8:30 AM CT against the loser of #14 Gustavus Adolphus and Beloit in an elimination game.
