SAINT PETER, Minn. -- The University of Chicago baseball team had their historic season come to a close on Sunday afternoon in Saint Peter with a 10-2 loss to #25 UW-Oshkosh in a winner-take-all Regional Final.

John Butka took the hill for just his second start of the season, and the junior had himself a day, throwing six shutout innings in the deciding game to help keep the Maroons in the game.

On the offensive side, UChicago struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning as Braden Jirovec led off the inning with a walk, stole second base, and advanced to third and home on a pair of groundouts for the first run of the game.

Then, in the fifth inning, Jackson Slipock ripped a ball deep over the left field wall for a solo home run to give the Maroons a 2-0 lead.

After six great innings for Butka on the mound, he gave up three consecutive hits to start the seventh as the Titans were able to take a 3-2 lead. The Titans added three more in the eighth inning and four more in the ninth inning as UChicago used six relief pitchers in the final three innings to try to close out the game. Unfortunately, the offense was unable to keep their hot weekend and season going in the final three innings as they fell 10-2 in the Regional Finals.

Braden Jirovec tallied two of the four UChicago hits in the loss, and Jackson Slipock and Nathan Bae each added one.

A pair of single-season school records fell during the Regional with Michael Gladden breaking the record for runs scored with 54 and Braden Jirovec breaking the record for hits with 71 after five hits in the two Championship games.

With the loss, the Maroons end their season with a program-best 29-16 record and their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
