CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago softball team picked up a 3-0 win over Brandeis to open their final series of the weekend on Friday afternoon. The Maroons extended their consecutive shutout innings streak to 28 straight innings with the last run allowed by UChicagto coming on April 29 at Carthage.
Game one of the series saw yet another pitching duel with
Paige Heffke and Ragini Kannan. The duo of pitchers combined to retire 18 of the first 19 batters of the game with just one baserunner in the first three innings, a soft liner between short and third that hit off the glove of a diving Maroon.
UChicago got their first batter aboard in the fourth inning with a leadoff walk by
Sedona Ding. After
Madeline Murphy sacrificed Ding to second,
Audrey Hui put the Maroons in front with an RBI single through the right side. Then, three consecutive two-out singles by
Laila Sims,
Matilda Nelson, and
Anna Jensen brought home two more UChicago runs to extend their lead to 3-0.
The three-run inning was all that Heffke needed for the Maroons as she retired 11 of the final 12 batters of the game, allowing just one walk in the seventh inning. In her last three starts, Heffke has pitched 18 innings of shutout softball with just 4 hits and 2 walks allowed and 9 strikeouts.
With the wins, the Maroons improve to 19-19 on the season and 8-8 in the UAA. The team will return to the field on Saturday at 12 PM and 2 PM for their Senior Day games against the Judges. The Maroons will honor their four seniors,
Paige Heffke,
Katelyn Ohlde,
Laila Sims, and
Paige Zvokel, in between games of the doubleheader.
