The University of Chicago men's soccer team opens its 2025 campaign on Friday, August 29, traveling to Saint Peter, Minnesota to take on the #19 Gustavus Adolphus Gusties.

UCHICAGO NOTES:

* UChicago is coming off a 7-8-3 season with a 2-2-3 record in the UAA that culminated with a fourth-place finish.
* The Maroons missed the NCAA Tournament in 2024 for the first time since 2013, snapping a streak of nine consecutive postseason appearances.
* The 2024 campaign marked the program's first season with single-digit wins since 2013 and its first losing record since 2008.
* Friday's match with #19 Gustavus Adolphus marks the sixth time in program history that UChicago will face a top-25 team in its season opener. The Maroons are 2-2-1 in those games, including a 4-2 win over No. 14 St. Olaf in 2023 and a 1-1 draw with No. 17 Dominican (IL) in 2012.
* 2025 is the third consecutive season that UChicago will face two opponents either ranked or receiving votes in the preseason top-25 poll. The Maroons are 2-1-1 in such games over the past two years.
* UChicago holds a 2-6 all-time record against the #19 team in the country. Their most recent meeting against a #19 side came in the 2021 NCAA Final Four, where they fell 1-0 in double overtime to Amherst.
* The Maroons return six of their top-10 minutes earners from last season, led by veterans Nick Lorr and Alex Gomas.
* Edward Wu and Samuel Jimenez are the top returning goal scorers, each recording four goals and multiple assists in 2024.
* The incoming class features five freshmen representing four states and one international player.
* UChicago also welcomes two graduate transfers: Charlie Wagner (Colorado College) and Louis Bock (Coastal Carolina).
* The 2025 senior class includes eight student-athletes: Gabriel Diaz, Ricky Kai, Kai Walsh, David Schuster, George Lin, Patrick Lin, Kevin Valdez, and Alex Gomas.
* Following Friday's contest, the Maroons will remain in Minnesota to face St. Olaf in their final match of the season-opening road swing.

#19 GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS NOTES: 

* Gustavus Adolphus finished 2024 with a 16-2-3 overall record and an 8-0-2 mark in the MIAC.
* The Gusties captured the MIAC regular season championship before falling to St. Olaf in the MIAC Tournament final.
* Gustavus made its third consecutive NCAA Tournament and fifth in the past six years, defeating MSOE 2-1 before falling 1-0 to UW-Platteville in the second round.
* The Gusties will feature a new goalkeeper in 2025 after senior Egan Bedwell played every minute in net last season.
* The team graduated its top five goal scorers, with returners Rivaldo Pena, Simon Woods, and Jack Isroff leading the way offensively (two goals each in 2024).
* The #19 preseason ranking is the program's second-highest in the past 19 years, behind only a #8 ranking in 2023.
* 2025 also marks the fifth straight season that Gustavus has received votes in the national top-25 preseason poll.
* Gustavus will return to action on Sunday, August 31, when they host Pacific Lutheran.

SERIES HISTORY:

* The all-time series between UChicago and Gustavus Adolphus is level at 1-1-1.
* The most recent matchup occurred on August 30, 2024, with Gustavus claiming a 1-0 win on UChicago's home field in the season opener.
* The first meeting between the two programs came on November 20, 2022, when UChicago earned a 1-0 victory at Stagg Field in the Elite Eight.
* The lone meeting in Saint Peter took place on September 3, 2023, and ended in a 2-2 draw.
* Across the three meetings, the two teams have combined for just six total goals, with each team finding the back of the net three times.
