Women's Soccer Takes on East Texas Baptist on Friday in Season Opener

GAME NOTES

The University of Chicago women's soccer team opens its 2025 campaign on Friday, August 29, traveling to Santa Cruz, California to take on the East Texas Baptist Tigers in a neutral site contest.

UCHICAGO NOTES:

* The Maroons come off a 13-7-2 season in 2024, going 2-4-1 in UAA play and finishing sixth in the conference.
* UChicago made a strong postseason run with wins over Lawrence (4-0), #16 Calvin (3-1), and #5 Messiah (3-2) before falling 1-0 to eventual national champion #1 WashU in the Sectional Finals.
* The Sectional Finals appearance marks the second in the past four years, following a 2-1 loss to #5 Christopher Newport in 2021.
* The Maroons will aim to reach their eleventh NCAA Tournament in the past 12 seasons, with their only miss since 2013 coming in 2022.
* Indira Naylor highlights the returning players after her impressive 15-goal campaign as a freshman last season.
* Layne Kohler also returns after leading UChicago with 1,731 minutes played, averaging 79 minutes per game as a junior.
* UChicago welcomes a nine-player freshman class, primarily from the West Coast, including six from California and one each from Colorado, Washington, and Connecticut.
* The Maroons also added one undergraduate transfer, Bella Ballard from the University of Portland.
* The 2025 senior class includes Sophia Sasaki, Milly Koenig, Layne Kohler, Ariel Alleyne, Anna Chard, Avery Gallucci, and Mary Stuart Kerrigan.
* Following Friday's game, UChicago will remain in Santa Cruz to take on the hosts, UC Santa Cruz, in their first true road match of the season.

EAST TEXAS BAPTIST NOTES: 

* East Texas Baptist finished 2024 with a 6-11-1 overall record and 3-5 in the ASC.
* The Tigers reached the ASC Semifinals, falling 4-0 to Hardin-Simmons.
* Senior goalkeeper Cadence Tischler played every minute last season, recording 100 saves.
* Giselle Laredo and Grace Shurley return as the top offensive threats for the Tigers.
* After Friday's match, East Texas Baptist will return to the field in Santa Cruz on Sunday for a neutral site contest against Linfield.

SERIES HISTORY:

* This will be the first-ever meeting between UChicago and East Texas Baptist.
* It will also be the Maroons' first matchup against any American Southwest Conference team.
