Men's Soccer Defense Extends Shutout Minutes Streak to 333 in 0-0 Draw

WHEATON, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's soccer team took a short trip to the suburbs on Wednesday afternoon and came away with their second 0-0 draw of the season.

The first half was fast-paced, with both teams generating chances but unable to find the opening goal. Wheaton's best look came in the 29th minute off a free kick into the box, but a close-range shot was saved cleanly by UChicago goalkeeper Ali Alamery.

The Maroons nearly broke through in the 33rd minute when Vaughn DeRath fired from the top of the 18 after a corner, but the Thunder defense deflected it away. Wheaton nearly stole the lead just before halftime, as Cooper Falling's volley from 25 yards rattled off the post in the 43rd minute.

UChicago applied heavy pressure in the second half, hitting the woodwork twice in quick succession. William Stewart beat the keeper in the 46th minute but struck the crossbar, and Jadyn Hsieh-Bailey followed with a free kick that smacked the post in the 57th. The Maroons nearly found the breakthrough again in the 60th minute when DeRath's corner found Chase Perry for a header that was cleared off the line.

Despite outshooting Wheaton 10-1 in the second half, UChicago couldn't find the winner. The defense was airtight throughout, holding the Thunder to just one shot on goal all match. With the clean sheet, the Maroons extended their shutout streak to 333 minutes across four matches. Alamery became the first UChicago goalkeeper since Will Boyes in 2022 to record three consecutive clean sheets.

Hsieh-Bailey paced the Maroons with six shots, while Kai Walsh and Perry added three apiece.

With the result, UChicago moves to 1-1-2 on the season. The Maroons return home Saturday night to host the Aurora Spartans at 7:00 PM at Stagg Field.
