CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's soccer team earned its fifth consecutive result on Wednesday night, battling to a 1-1 draw against Hope College.
The Maroons struck first in the 20th minute when Louis Bock connected with Alex Gomas on a long ball at the top of the box. Gomas flicked a header into the middle, where Giovanni Caselli collected it before being taken down from behind by a Hope defender. UChicago was awarded its second penalty kick of the season, and Evan Kanellos calmly slotted it into the bottom left corner for a 1-0 lead.
UChicago nearly doubled the advantage in the 34th minute when Rafe Westlund's cross was deflected to the penalty spot, giving Max Weene a golden chance, but the Hope defense came up big with a block just in front of the net.
The Flying Dutchmen's best chance of the opening half came in the 42nd minute, but goalkeeper Ali Alamery made a full-extension dive to his left to deny a near-post finish and preserve the 1-0 lead at halftime.
Alamery continued his strong performance in the second half, making back-to-back saves in the 60th minute off hard strikes by Hope.
Then, the Maroons again came close to extending their lead in the 71st minute when William Stewart ripped a left-footed shot to the near post, but Hope's keeper stretched to make a diving save.
Despite the defensive stand, Hope found the equalizer in the 89th minute. A shot from distance by Seth Walters deflected off a UChicago defender's shin and into the back of the net for an own goal, tying the score 1-1. The own goal snapped UChicago's shutout streak at 511 minutes – the fifth-longest streak by the program in the past 15 years.
Stewart and Weene led the Maroons with two shots apiece, while Alamery tallied four saves in the draw.
With the result, UChicago moved to 2-1-3 on the season. The Maroons return to action on Saturday, hosting #17 UW–Eau Claire at 6 PM.
