CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago women's volleyball team split their two matches on the second day of the Rosalie Resch Invitational with a 3-2 loss to Lawrence and a 3-0 win over Illinois Tech.
After Lawrence took the opening set in the first match of the day 25-22, the Maroons were able to answer with a dominating performance in the second set, leveling the match with a 25-16 set win. Then, in the third set, the Vikings were able to fight off four set points for the Maroons before UChicago took the set with a big kill by
Thalita Marangon.
In the fourth set, the Maroons stretched their advance to 21-18 before Lawrence responded by winning 7 of the final 9 points to send the match to a fifth set. In the final set, both teams were on fire, hitting over .300, but Lawrence was able to outlast the Maroons and pick up the five-set win with a 15-9 win in the final set.
Diya Mishra led the team with 22 kills and added 8 digs and 3 blocks.
Thalita Marangon added a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs, and
Caroline Sele also finished with double-digit kills with 10.
Olivia Zamis led the defense with 6 blocks to go along with her 6 kills and 3 service aces.Â
Hillary Cheung also added a double-double with 31 assists and 14 digs.
In the second match of the day, UChicago rolled through the first two sets of the match with 25-20 and 25-17 victories, but Illinois Tech would not go away. The Scarlet Hawks took an 18-13 lead in the set, but the Maroons would ride an
Ellie Maxwell serving run to level the score at 18.Â
Neither team led by more than two points for the remainder of the set, and each team saved multiple set points with Illinois Tech saving three and UChicago saving two before the Scarlet Hawks were able to pull it out 30-28 to send the match to a fourth set.
In the fourth set,
Diya Mishra went on a roll for the Maroons with four kills in a seven-point span to help stretch the UChicago lead to 19-15. This lead would be enough to allow the Maroons to hold on the set 25-20 and the four-set victory.
Mishra willed the Maroons to victory in the second match, leading the team with both 19 kills and 15 digs while hitting .214.
Freshman
Adelee Kaiton had her coming out party in the second match of the day with 14 kills and a .310 hitting percentage after only recording 3 kills in her first five matches. She also added 7 digs and 2 aces in the win.
With the split, the Maroons move to 3-3 on the season. UChicago will be back in action next weekend as they travel to UW-Oshkosh for three matches against the top-7 teams in the country.
