Football Drops Season Opener to #18 Carnegie Mellon

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago football team came up short in its 2025 season opener, falling 20-0 to #18 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

The Tartans struck early, marching downfield for a touchdown on their opening drive. They extended the lead with another score and a field goal in the second quarter to make it 17-0 at halftime.

From that point on, the Maroon defense tightened up—holding Carnegie Mellon to just three points over the final 38 minutes of play.

Offensively, however, UChicago was unable to find its rhythm and was held scoreless in the shutout loss.

Jack Ruff led the passing game, completing 9 of 18 attempts for 47 yards. Luke Degner paced the receiving corps with four catches for 35 yards, while Jake Lowry added 24 yards on the ground.

Defensively, Hugh Rolls and Zach Meyer each tallied seven tackles, and Anthony Nittoli recorded the Maroons' lone sack of the contest.

With the loss, UChicago sits at 0-1 to start the season. The Maroons will look to rebound next Saturday, September 13, when they travel to face Cornell (IA) in their Midwest Conference opener.
