#18 Women's Basketball Rides 22-7 Run to Road Victory at Case Western

CLEVELAND -- The 18th-ranked University of Chicago women's basketball team rode a 22-7 run over the final 10:05 of the game to pick up a key road win at Case Western Reserve on Friday night.

The Maroons got off to a hot start on the road in Cleveland with six straight points from Bri Simpson and Annabelle Spotts to open the game. The Spartans would battle back with seven straight points of their own, and neither team would take a two-possession lead until back-to-back triples vaulted the Spartans in front by seven midway through the second quarter. UChicago would battle back with a 6-0 run of its own, but the team would take a three-point deficit into the halftime locker room.

In the third quarter, Case Western Reserve remained in control as an 8-2 run put the Spartans up seven. However, Chris Sanders hit a big triple off an offensive rebound from Kasi Samuda to cut the lead to four heading into the final period.

The last-second triple by Sanders would spark the UChicago offense as the Maroons would take their first lead since 9:09 to go in the second quarter with a 10-0 run. A fastbreak three from Kate Gross and fastbreak layup from Alexis Clark would cap the run and put UChicago in front by three.

Case Western Reserve would level the score at 44 with 2:55 remaining in the game, but Annabelle Spotts came alive down the stretch with six points in the final 33 seconds, led by a layup off an offensive rebound from Alexis Clark, to lock up the victory for the Maroons.

Annabelle Spotts led the team with 16 points and 9 rebounds in the win, and the sophomore scored nine of her 16 points in the final quarter of the game. Chris Sanders added 11 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals, and Alexis Clark came up huge on the bench with 11 points, six of which came in the fourth quarter, as well as adding seven rebounds and three blocks.

With the win, the Maroons improve to 9-3 on the season and 1-1 in UAA play. UChicago returns to action on Sunday morning as the team buses to Pittsburgh for another UAA showdown with Carnegie Mellon University at 11 AM ET.
