#2 Maroons Hold Off Tartans in 70-62 WIn

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — In a physical battle, the second-ranked University of Chicago men's basketball team secured a  70–62 road win over Carnegie Mellon on Sunday afternoon. Shane Regan gritted out 20 points on 6 for 17 shooting to lead the offensive effort for Chicago.

The Maroons survived 11 ties and five lead changes against a gritty Tartans squad in the game.

Chicago held a slim 34-30 edge at halftime after closing the opening first period on a strong run. With the score tied at 28 late in the half, Regan scored six of the Maroons' final eight points, including a pair of free throws to give UChicago breathing room heading into the break.

Carnegie Mellon opened the second half hot, briefly taking the lead on a finish at the basket to make it 38-36. The Maroons responded with one of their best stretches of the game, as Phillip Lawrence knocked down back-to-back jumpers and LJ Moore hit a layup to spark an 11-2 run that pushed the lead to double digits at 54–43 with just over seven minutes remaining.

From there, UChicago controlled the pace, fighting off a couple of late pushes from the Tartans. Regan delivered the dagger moments, hitting a three and finishing through contact shortly after to restore a nine-point cushion. The Maroons then sealed the game at the free-throw line, shooting 9-10 from the charity strip in the second half.

Regan led all scorers with 20 points, adding seven rebounds and six assists to lead the stat sheet. Joe Berry finished with 11 points and LJ Moore provided a spark off the bench to record a career-high 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Lawrence chipped in seven points as Daniel Cochran added nine and seven rebounds.

The Maroons extend their record to 13-1 and 3-0 in UAA play.

They'll return to home base next weekend as they take on Brandeis and NYU in another slate of UAA games.
