Bo Flowers returns to the UChicago football coaching staff in 2022 for his fifth season. He coaches the nickel backs and is also Co-Special Teams Coordinator. In his previous stint with the Maroons, he served as Defensive Backs Coach and Co-Defensive Coordinator from 2014-17.
Flowers spent the 2021 season as Cornerbacks Coach at Western Illinois University. He also served as Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach at Lawrence University for three seasons.
The 2017 Maroon defense finished the regular season ranked third in NCAA Division III in turnovers gained with 31 (14 interceptions, 17 fumble recoveries). They were also 26th in total defense (282.1 YPG).
In 2015, senior cornerback Vincent Beltrano was named a First Team All-American while setting new school records with 15 interceptions and 40 passes defended. He was also a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American.
In 2014, the Maroons began the season 5-0, their best start to a season since 1929. UChicago finished the year with an 8-1 record, won the UAA title with a 3-0 mark, and earned UAA Coaching Staff of the Year. Defensive tackle Scott Mainquist was named UAA Defensive Player of the Year.
The 2014 team ranked nationally in a number of significant categories: No. 3 in first down defense, No. 7 in turnover margin (1.78), No. 7 in third-down defensive conversion percentage (.262), No. 5 in total defense (247.1 yards per game), No. 8 in rushing defense (84.1 yards per game), No. 17 in fewest penalties per game (4.56) and No. 18 in scoring defense (15.1 points per game).
Previously, Flowers was the defensive graduate assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University for two years. Flowers played collegiate football at the University of Illinois (2007-09) and Illinois State University (2010). He was named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team while at Illinois State.
Additionally, Flowers was a stand-out baseball player who was drafted in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Detroit Tigers. He played for four years in the minor league systems of the Tigers and the Chicago Cubs.
Flowers was an Illinois All-State selection in football and baseball as a prep and was named the Chicago Sun-Times Male Athlete of the Year in 2002.
Flowers earned his bachelor’s degree in community health from Illinois in 2010 and his master’s degree in health & human services (sports management) from Eastern Michigan in 2014.
