Box Score BOSTON -- In a game stalled by an 89-minute lightning delay, the 24th-ranked University of Chicago and host Brandeis University played to a 1-1 tie in University Athletic Association women's soccer action Friday night.
Brandeis (5-7-1 overall, 0-2-1 UAA) scored 2:01 into the match when Mary Shimko sent a high shot just over the outstretched arms of Chicago senior goalkeeper Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel). Mimi Theodore assisted on the goal, Shimko's third of the year.
Chicago (6-4-2, 0-1-2) had a scoring chance late in the first half, but Brandeis netminder Francine Kofinas stopped a shot from freshman defender Ellie von Storch (Charlottesville, Va./ Charlottesville) (pictured) with a diving save.
Chicago tied the game in the 54th minute on senior forward Allison Hegel's (Vienna, Va./ Jefferson) team-leading seventh goal of the season. Less than two minutes after Hegel's goal, lightning forced a 1:29 delay.
Gormley came up with a key save in the 80th minute, tipping an Alyssa Fenenbock shot over the top of the goal.
In the closing seconds of regulation, Kofinas stopped Hegel on a breakaway to send the game into overtime.
Brandeis held a 19-18 edge in shots. Gormley made nine saves, while Kofinas stopped six shots.
The Maroons play the second half of their UAA weekend doubleheader Sunday at New York University.
