CHICAGO, Ill. -- A number of close matches swung to the other side as the University of Chicago wrestling team lost to visiting Elmhurst College 32-3 on Saturday.
Six of the matches were decided by three points or less, and the No. 4-ranked Bluejays came out the victors in five of them. Elmhurst also added two major decisions and a pin to their point tally.
UChicago's lone win came from Joeie Ruettiger at 149 pounds, who outlasted Jim Spangler 8-6. Ruettiger is now 2-0 through the first two matches of the season.
Alex Moore took Mark Johnson to overtime in the first match at 125 pounds. But Johnson picked up the point to get the win. William Long also wrestled a tight match at 133 pounds with All-American Dalton Bullard, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in his weight class. Sam Hopkins rallied from a 3-0 deficit and came up one point short at 165 pounds.
"We made some mistakes, but not wrestling hard was not one of them," said Head Coach Leo Kocher. "Seven matches were competitive and I expect the gap to be closed as the season goes on."
