CLEVELAND -- Four Maroons, including Rookie of the Year Mario Palmisano (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/ Willoughby South), won individual titles as the University of Chicago claimed second place at the 2012 University Athletic Association Wrestling Championship Saturday at Case Western Reserve University.
In the first of the day's three duals, the Maroons dropped a 19-14 decision to eventual champion New York University.
Chicago took a 6-0 lead after sophomore Jake Schramm (Darien, Ill./ Hinsdale South) and freshman Will Long (Willoughby, Ohio/ St. Ignatius) won by decision at 125 and 133 pounds.
NYU claimed the lead 7-6 with wins at 141 and 149, but a major decision by freshman Devon Range (Cleveland, Ohio/ Lyndhurst Brush) at 157 put the Maroons back on top 10-7.
Three straight NYU decisions (165, 174, 184) followed by a Palmisano major decision at 197 made the score 16-14 in favor of NYU heading into the final bout. NYU then claimed the dual match victory with a Jamie Myers 5-4 decision at heavyweight.
Chicago won four of six contested bouts en route to a 40-6 win over Case in Saturday's second bout. Freshman Ryley Hankenson (Decatur, Ind./ Bellmont) won by fall, freshman Joe Ellis (Spring Grove, Ill./ Richmond-Burton) won by major decision, and Range and sophomore Sam Pennisi (Lombard, Ill./ Glenbard East) won by decision.
In the day's final match, NYU defeated the host Spartans 43-4 to capture the 2012 conference title and end the Maroons' three-year championship streak.
Following the event, Palmisano was selected as the UAA Rookie of the Year. He joined Schramm, Long, and Range on the All-Association Team.
The Maroons will compete in the Great Lakes Regional Saturday, Feb. 25 in Minneapolis.
