Maroons Open Season with Split

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The University of Chicago softball team opened its 2012 campaign with a win and a loss Saturday in Clermont, Fla. After falling to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville 5-4 in their first game, the Maroons defeated Concordia University Wisconsin 4-3 in extra innings.

Game Summary vs. Wis.-Platteville

  • Nathalie Schattner's three-run home run in the top of the first inning gave the Pioneers (1-1) the early lead.

  • Freshman LF Raechel Cloud (Wilmette, Ill./ New Trier) got the Maroons on the board with a two-run single in the fourth, but a two-run base hit off the bat of Colleen Lowe in the top of the fifth increased UW-Platteville's lead to 5-2.

  • Chicago scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and had the tying run on first with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but UW-Platteville hurler Melissa Anderson retired the final two Chicago batters to preserve the win.

Highlights & Notes vs. Wis.-Platteville

  • Anderson (1-0) did not allow an earned run over seven innings. She fanned five without allowing a walk.

  • Senior RHP Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) took the loss (0-1) for the Maroons. She allowed five runs (four earned) over 4.2 innings of work.

  • The only player for either team with multiple hits, Chicago sophomore CF Kaitlyn Carpenter (Des Moines, Iowa/ East) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Game Summary vs. Concordia Wisconsin

  • Cloud gave the Maroons (1-1) the early advantage with a two-run triple in the top of the second inning, but the Falcons (2-4) evened the score with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.

  • Both teams scored on wild pitches in the eighth inning.

  • Senior 2B Julia Schneider's (Edgewater, N.J./ Dwight-Englewood) one-out single in the ninth plated Carpenter with the go-ahead run.

Highlights & Notes vs. Concordia Wisconsin

  • Junior RHP Kim Cygan (Lake Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) (1-0) scattered three hits and struck out 11 en route to the complete-game victory.

  • Jamie Schuh (1-1) went the distance for Concordia Wisconsin. She allowed eight hits and six walks while fanning three.

  • Schneider went 3-for-5, while Carpenter went 2-for-5.

  • The win marked the 250th career victory for Head Coach Ruth Kmak.
