CLERMONT, Fla. -- For the second straight day, the University of Chicago softball team split two games on its season-opening spring break trip. Chicago dropped its first game to Fontbonne University 7-4 before defeating Western Connecticut State University 12-4 in Sunday's second game.

Game Summary vs. Fontbonne

  • Fontbonne took advantage of six Chicago errors to score three unearned runs.

  • The Griffins (3-2) led 4-1 after five innings before Chicago tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth. Junior RF Samantha Hobson (Apex, N.C./ Enloe) delivered a two-run double and came around to score the third run of the inning.

  • Danielle Glixman then drove in the first of Fontbonne's three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Highlights & Notes vs. Fontbonne

  • Fontbonne reliever Rachel McCarthy (1-1), who entered the game in the sixth inning, retired six of the seven batters she faced to notch the win.

  • In her first career appearance, freshman Emily Ashbridge (Philadelphia, Pa./ Masterman) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) over 1.2 innings of work.

Game Summary vs. Western Conn. St.

  • The Maroons (2-2) pounded out 12 hits and drew five walks en route to the six-inning victory.

  • Chicago led 5-4 after three and one half innings before plating five runs in the fourth and adding single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Highlights & Notes vs. Western Conn. St.

  • Senior RHP Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) earned the win (1-1) after tossing four innings without allowing an earned run and went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI at the plate.

  • Freshman LF Raechel Cloud (Wilmette, Ill./ New Trier) drove in three runs, while Hobson collected a pair of RBIs.

  • Chicago chased losing pitcher Stephanie Moss (1-1) after 3.2 innings. Moss was tagged for eight hits and eight runs (four earned).
