Maroons Defeat Buffalo State, Union

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Extending its winning streak to three games, the University of Chicago softball team defeated Buffalo State University 16-6 and downed Union College 6-0 on the third day of its spring break trip Tuesday afternoon.

Game 1 Summary & Highlights

  • Chicago scored nine runs in the third inning en route to a 16-6 rout over Buffalo State in Tuesday's first contest.

  • Sophomore CF Kaitlyn Carpenter (Des Moines, Iowa/ East) (pictured) and junior RF Samantha Hobson (Apex, N.C./ Enloe) led the Maroons' onslaught. Carpenter went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs, while Hobson homered and drove in four runs.

  • Senior RHP Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) earned the victory (2-1) with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. She also collected a pair of RBIs on the day.

  • Aleesha Williams (1-2) took the loss for Buffalo State (3-1), after allowing 10 runs (five earned) over 2.1 innings.

Game 2 Summary & Highlights

  • Junior RHP Kim Cygan (Lake Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) allowed just one hit over six innings as the Maroons capped the afternoon with a 6-0 win over Union (2-4). Cygan (2-0) walked one and struck out four.

  • Freshman LF Raechel Cloud (Wilmette, Ill./ New Trier) capped the game's scoring with a three-run home run in the sixth inning.

  • Cloud, Carpenter, sophomore C Zoe Oliver-Grey (Oakland, Calif./ College Prep), and senior 1B Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) each had a pair of hits.

  • Allyson Staats (1-1) went the distance for Union.

Notes

  • Chicago's 16 runs against Buffalo State marked the team's highest offensive output since an 18-0 win over the University of Southern Maine on Mar. 20, 2010.

  • Carpenter's home run against Buffalo State was the first of her career, as was Cloud's blast against Union.

  • With her performance against Union, Cygan lowered her season ERA to 0.72. She has fanned 23 batters in 19 innings of work.
