Maroons Extend Win Streak to Five

CLERMONT, Fla. -- With a 10-9 come-from-behind win over Bethel College and a 4-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Wednesday afternoon, the University of Chicago softball team extended its spring break winning streak to five games.

Game 1 Summary & Highlights

  • Chicago trailed Bethel (4-6) 5-1 after three innings before tying the game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore CF Kaitlyn Carpenter (Des Moines, Iowa/ East) had a key two-run single before coming around to score later in the inning.

  • Bethel recaptured the lead, 6-5, with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Maroons drew back to even again when senior 1B Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) led off the sixth with her first home run of the season.
  • The Maroons took a 9-6 lead into the top of the seventh, but Bethel evened the score with a three-run home run off the bat of Rachel Gilbert.

  • Chicago won the game in its half of the seventh. After junior RF Jacqueline Ryan (Monee, Ill./ Peotone) reached on an error to lead off the frame, senior 2B Julia Schneider (Edgewater, N.J./ Dwight-Englewood) (pictured) delivered a walk-off double.

  • Carpenter (4 hits) and Schneider (3) combined for seven of the Maroons' season-high 17 hits. Sophomore C Julia Covello (Mill Creek, Wash./ Jackson) also had three hits on the day.

  • Junior RHP Kim Cygan (Lake Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) picked up the win (3-0), pitching four innings in relief. Bethel's Anja Erlandson (3-1) was tagged with the loss.

Game 2 Summary & Highlights

  • Cygan improved to 4-0 on the season as she tossed a four-hit complete game in the Maroons' 4-1 win over Wisconsin-Platteville (5-2). She walked two and struck out eight.

  • Freshman LF Raechel Cloud's (Wilmette, Ill./ New Trier) two-run single in the top of the third drove in the go-ahead run.

  • Carpenter went 3-for-4, giving her seven hits in nine at-bats in Wednesday's two contests.

  • Jeni Freiburger (3-4) took the loss. She was charged with four runs over four innings of work.

Notes

  • Cygan has won her last six decisions dating back to last season.

  • The win over Bethel marked the Maroons' second come-from-behind victory of the year.

  • Chicago's win over UW-Platteville came four days after a 5-4 Pioneer victory in the Maroons' season opener this past Saturday.

  • Carpenter has had five consecutive multiple-hit games.

  • Payonk has hit safely in all eight games this season.
