Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- With a 9-1 win over the University of Southern Maine and a 9-0 decision over Allegheny College on its spring break trip Friday, the University of Chicago softball team extended its winning streak to seven games and raised its overall record to 8-2.
Game 1 Summary & Highlights
- Chicago led 2-1 after and four and one-half innings before a seven-run outburst in the fifth ended the game.
- Senior 2B Julia Schneider (Edgewater, N.J./ Dwight-Englewood) and freshman LF Raechel Cloud (Wilmette, Ill./ New Trier) singled and scored, and freshman RHP Tabetha Bohac (Lake Zurich, Ill./ Lake Zurich) delivered a two-run single in the Chicago fifth.
- Bohac (1-0) earned her first career victory as she scattered four hits over five innings without allowing an earned run. She struck out five without issuing a walk.
- Despite allowing only two unearned runs over four innings of work, Stefanie Stockwell (0-1) took the loss for Southern Maine, which was making its 2012 season debut.
Game 2 Summary & Highlights
- After scoring seven runs in the final inning of Friday's first game, Chicago plated five runs in the opening frame of the day's second game, a 9-0 win over Allegheny (12-4).
- Sophomore CF Kaitlyn Carpenter (Des Moines, Iowa/ East) had four of the Maroons' 13 hits to go along with a pair of RBIs.
- Senior 1B Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) (pictured) had three hits -- including her second home run of the season -- and two RBIs.
- Junior RHP Kim Cygan (Lake Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) improved to 5-0 after allowing only two hits over six scoreless frames. She fanned four without allowing a walk.
- Cygan and sophomore C Zoe Oliver-Grey (Oakland, Calif./ College Prep) each collected a pair of RBIs.
- Failing to get out of the first inning, Allegheny Brittany Rung (0-1) took the loss.
Notes
- Chicago has started the season 8-2 or better for the third time since 2007. The Maroons won nine of their first 10 games in 2010.
- Payonk has hit safely in all 10 games to date. Cloud extended her hitting streak to seven games.
- Cygan has won her last seven decisions dating back to last season. She is 5-0 this year with a 1.16 ERA.
- With her 4-for-5 performance against Allegheny, Carpenter had multiple hits for the eighth time in 10 games.
