Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- On the final day of its spring break trip, the University of Chicago softball team split a pair of games against nationally-ranked opponents. After dropping a 2-0 decision to #5 Eastern Connecticut State University, the Maroons defeated #25 Tufts University 4-1.
Game 1 Summary & Highlights
- Eastern Connecticut State RHP Molly Rathbun threw a no-hitter as the Warriors (8-1) defeated the Maroons 2-0 in Saturday's first game. Rathbun (7-1) struck out 14 of the 25 batters she faced and allowed only one ball to leave the infield.
- DP Kassondra Silva's run-scoring single in the top of the fourth gave the Warriors the only run they would need.
- Senior RHP Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) took the loss (2-2) despite a solid outing in which she allowed seven hits without a walk and fanned three.
Game 2 Summary & Highlights
- Chicago (9-3) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning en route to a 4-1 win over Tufts (10-3) in Saturday's final spring break contest.
- A sacrifice fly from senior 2B Julia Schneider (Edgewater, N.J./ Dwight-Englewood), a run-scoring single off the bat of freshman LF Raechel Cloud (Wilmette, Ill./ New Trier), and a two-out RBI double from Neuhaus accounted for the Maroons' three seventh-inning runs.
- Junior RHP Kim Cygan (Lake Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) won for the sixth time in six decisions as she held the Jumbos to three hits and no bases on balls.
- Tufts RHP Rebecca DiBiase (4-2) allowed 11 hits and four runs, all earned.
Notes
- Cygan, who won her eighth consecutive decision dating back to last season, lowered her season ERA to 0.97. In her seven spring break appearances, she held opposing hitters to a .138 average and walked only seven while striking out 40.
- Sophomore CF Kaitlyn Carpenter (Des Moines, Iowa/ East) led the Maroons with a .511 batting average on the spring break trip. She had multiple hits in nine of 12 games.
- Cloud batted .486 on the trip and led the Maroons with 16 RBIs and a team-high six multiple-RBI performances.
