WHEATON, Ill. -- Led by tournament MVP, junior RHP Kim Cygan (Lake Barrington, Ill./ Barrington), the University of Chicago softball team won a pair of games Saturday to win the Wheaton College Invitational.
Game 1 Summary & Highlights
- Cygan (7-1) allowed just three hits without a walk while striking out six as the Maroons defeated the host Thunder 3-0 in Saturday's opening contest. Cygan (pictured) retired Wheaton's (15-6) first nine batters and 18 of its first 19 en route to her first shutout of the year.
- Sophomore CF Kaitlyn Carpenter's (Des Moines, Iowa/ East) two-out, two-run single in the top of the second inning gave the Maroons the only runs they would need.
- Freshman SS Tabetha Bohac (Lake Zurich, Ill./ Lake Zurich) had two of the Maroons' eight hits and scored both times.
Game 2 Summary & Highlights
- Senior 1B Liz Payonk's (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) three-run home run highlighted the Maroons' 8-0 victory over Calvin College (5-10) in Saturday's second game.
- With two outs and no runners aboard in the bottom of the third inning, Carpenter tripled and came around to score on sophomore DP Julia Covello's (Mill Creek, Wash./ Jackson) base hit. Two batters later, Payonk belted her team-leading third home run of the season to put the Maroons on top 4-0.
- Carpenter went 3-for-3, while junior SS Vicky Tomaka (Roselle, Ill./ Lake Park) was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Bohac and freshman LF Raechel Cloud (Wilmette, Ill./ New Trier) also drove in runs.
- Senior RHP Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) and freshman LHP Emily Ashbridge (Philadelphia, Pa./ Masterman) combined on the four-hit shutout. Neuhaus (4-2) scattered three hits over five innings, while Ashbridge retired three of the four batters she faced in the game's final frame.
Notes
- Saturday's game against Wheaton marked the first time this season the Maroons faced an opposing team on their home field.
- Chicago pitchers have allowed only one run in the team's last three games.
- Cygan lowered her season ERA to 0.85 and her opponent batting average to .130 with her victory over Wheaton.
- Carpenter extended her hitting streak to five games.
