Box Score 2 BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- In a key regional matchup Sunday afternoon, the University of Chicago softball team split a doubleheader with 22nd-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University. Chicago won game one 1-0 before the host Titans rallied for a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
Game 1 Summary & Highlights
- Junior RHP Kim Cygan (Lake Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) threw a four-hit shutout as the Maroons took Sunday's opener 1-0. Winning for the eighth time in nine decisions, Cygan notched her second straight shutout.
- Chicago scored the only run of the game in the top of the second inning when a bases loaded walk to sophomore DP Julia Covello (Mill Creek, Wash./ Jackson) (pictured) plated sophomore 3B Maddie McManus (Simsbury, Conn./ Simsbury), who doubled earlier in the frame.
Game 2 Summary & Highlights
- Illinois Wesleyan (12-3) scored twice in each of the first innings en route to a 6-2 win in Sunday's second game.
- 3B Emma Clark capped the Titans' scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third. Clark was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the game.
- Jessica Toth (2-0) worked the final four innings to record the victory.
- Senior RHP Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) took the loss for Maroons. Neuhaus (4-3) allowed six runs (four earned) over three innings, before giving way to Cygan, who closed out the game with three scoreless frames.
- Covello and senior 1B Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) delivered run-scoring base hits for the Maroons (13-5).
Notes
- Cygan extended her scoreless innings streak to 19.0. Since Apr. 30. 2011, she sports an 11-1 record.
- Illinois Wesleyan in Sunday's second game became the first team to collect at least 10 hits off the Maroons this season.
- Chicago stands at 3-2 against nationally-ranked opponents this season. The Maroons won two of three games against top-25 rivals on their spring break trip.
- Sophomore CF Kaitlyn Carpenter (Des Moines, Iowa/ East) extended her hitting streak to seven games. She went 2-for-4 in Sunday's second game to record her 11th multiple hit performance of the year.
