CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago softball team swept a doubleheader from North Park University Tuesday at Stagg Field, winning 15-1 and 3-1.
Game 1 Summary & Highlights
- Junior P Kim Cygan (Lake Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) allowed two hits over four innings and drove in five runs as the Maroons rolled to a 15-1 game one victory.
- The Maroons scored four runs in the first inning, seven in the second, and two each in the third and fourth frames.
- Cygan (9-2) held the Vikings hitless until the top of the fourth inning when Sonya Le doubled to left field.
- Senior 2B Julia Schneider (Edgewater, N.J./ Dwight-Englewood), sophomore CF Kaitlyn Carpenter (Des Moines, Iowa/ East), and Cygan each had three hits. Schneider and junior RF Samantha Hobson (Apex, N.C./ Enloe) both collected two RBIs.
- Freshman LF Raechel Cloud (Wilmette, Ill./ New Trier) (pictured) scored three runs and drove in one.
Game 2 Summary & Highlights
- Two-out RBI singles from Schneider and Cloud in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Maroons to the 3-1 win in Tuesday's nightcap.
- Chicago (17-7) scored in the bottom of the first before the Vikings (17-7) evened the score with a run in the top of the third.
- In the decisive fifth inning, Carpenter doubled with one out and came around to score the go-ahead run on Schneider's two-out single through the left side. Two batters later, Cloud singled home Schneider.
- Senior P Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) went the distance, scattering seven hits and two walks while fanning seven. She improved to 6-4 on the season.
Notes
- North Park had won six straight and 11 of 12 heading into Tuesday's action.
- Chicago extended its winning streak over North Park to seven games.
- Senior 1B Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) went 1-for-3 in the first game and 1-for-2 in game two to extend her hitting streak to 10 games.
- The Maroons improved to 17-1 when scoring the game's first run.
