Kaitlyn Carpenter's Record-Setting Triple Caps Sweep

CHICAGO -- Sophomore CF Kaitlyn Carpenter (Des Moines, Iowa/ East) tied the school season triples record in the first game and broke the record in the nightcap as the University of Chicago softball team swept a doubleheader from Hope College Saturday at Stagg Field.

Game 1 Summary & Highlights

  • Chicago pounded out 12 hits in Saturday's opener en route to a 9-3 victory.

  • Senior 1B Liz Payonk (Palos Heights, Ill./ Stagg) gave the Maroons the early lead with a two-run home run -- her fourth of the year -- in the bottom of the first inning.

  • Carpenter capped a five-run Chicago outburst in the fourth with a three-run double as the Maroons took a 7-0 lead.

  • Emma Page belted a two-run homer for Hope in the top of the fifth, but the Maroons answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth.

  • Senior P Sarah Neuhaus (Berkeley, Calif./ Berkeley) earned the win (7-4), allowing three runs over five innings. Freshman P Tabetha Bohac (Lake Zurich, Ill./ Lake Zurich) set down all six of the batters she faced over the final two frames.

Game 2 Summary & Highlights

  • Chicago (20-8) scored the only run of the game in the home half of the fourth inning. Carpenter led off with a triple down the left field line (pictured), then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior 2B Julia Schneider (Edgewater, N.J./ Dwight-Englewood). The triple was Carpenter's school record seventh of the year.

  • Junior P Kim Cygan (Lake Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) allowed only two hits en route to her third shutout of the season. Cygan (11-3) walked five and struck out six.

  • Hope hurler Olivia Vacik (5-7) allowed just three hits without a walk in a losing effort as the Flying Dutch fell to 14-20 on the year.

Notes

  • The Maroons notched their third consecutive 20-win campaign and ninth in 13 years under Head Coach Ruth Kmak.

  • Chicago improved to 6-2 at Stagg Field.

  • The Maroons return to action at Stagg Field Wednesday when they host Aurora University at 3 p.m. That doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday.
