Maroons Season Ends at NCAA Regional

ALMA, Mich. -- After defeating Denison University 1-0 in Saturday's first game, the University of Chicago dropped a 3-1 decision to host Alma College on the third day of the 2012 NCAA Division III Softball Championship.

The loss to Alma eliminated the Maroons from the regional, ending their season with a 26-11 overall record.

Denison Game Summary & Highlights

  • Junior P Kim Cygan (Lake Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) tossed a six-hit shutout as the Maroons won Saturday's first game 1-0 over Denison (28-19).

  • The Maroons scored the only run of the contest in the top of the fourth inning. Senior 2B Julia Schneider (Edgewater, N.J./ Dwight-Englewood) doubled to lead off the inning, then came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman LF Raechel Cloud (Wilmette, Ill./ New Trier).

  • Denison had the tying run on third and potential go-ahead run on second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh before Cygan (pictured) retired the Big Red's final hitter on an infield groundout.

Alma Game Summary & Highlights

  • Alma (31-13) took advantage of two Chicago errors to plate a pair of runs in top of the first inning. The Scots hit only one ball out of the infield -- a double from CF Erin Rodes -- in the inning.

  • Alma hurler Louise Rezmer (18-8) held the Maroons without a hit until sophomore DP Julia Covello (Mill Creek, Wash./ Jackson) singled to lead off the fourth inning.

  • Chicago scored its lone run in the sixth. Sophomore CF Kaitlyn Carpenter (Des Moines, Iowa/ East) singled with one out and scored on an error by the left fielder following a Schneider base hit down the left field line.

  • Alma picked up an insurance run in the seventh on a two-out single from 1B Emily Ross.

  • Chicago managed only four hits and one walk off Rezmer.

  • Cygan (16-5) went the distance for the Maroons, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned).

Notes

  • Chicago's 26 victories match the most in school history (2001, 2004, 2007).

  • The Maroons completed their seventh NCAA postseason appearance since 2000.
