Maroons softball begins season with 7-3 win over St. Olaf and 5-1 loss to St. Thomas

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The University of Chicago softball team began its season with a 7-3 win over St. Olaf College and a 5-1 loss to University of St. Thomas on Saturday.

The Maroons are now 1-1 after the opening day of its 12-game spring trip to Florida. The Oles fell to 0-3 and the Tommies improved to 9-2.

Game One - UChicago 7, St. Olaf 3

UChicago scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a tie and pull away against St. Olaf. Freshman pitcher Jordan Poole made her collegiate debut and hurled all seven innings for her first career victory. Poole allowed 10 hits and three runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Maroons scored the game's first two runs in the opening inning. Raechel Cloud lined a two-run triple to right field. Kristin Lopez made the score 3-1 in the third with a sacrifice fly. The Oles tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the third before UChicago broke the game open in the sixth. Cloud scored on an error for the go-ahead run, followed by RBI singles by Kathleen Kohm and Kaitlyn Carpenter and the final tally via error.

The Maroons pounded out 11 hits and made four errors defensively. Jacqueline Ryan, Carpenter, Kohm and Poole all tallied two hits each.

Game Two - St. Thomas 5, UChicago 1

The UChicago-St. Thomas game stayed scoreless until the top of the fourth when the Tommies hit a sacrifice fly to go up 1-0. The Maroons responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single by Maddie McManus to tie it at 1-1. St. Thomas came away with the win thanks to four runs in the top of the seventh inning via a two-run double and a two-run single.

Pitcher Kim Cygan took the loss, throwing all seven innings with eight hits and five runs allowed. The senior walked four and struck out two. The Maroons were held to five hits offensively and made one error on defense. Lopez went 2-for-3 at the plate.
