Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- The University of Chicago softball team kept rolling with an 8-2 win over Fontbonne University in the morning game, but its last-inning rally against Buffalo State College fell just short in a 9-8 loss in the second contest on Tuesday. The Maroons ran their record to 4-2.
Game One - UChicago 8, Fontbonne 2
Fontbonne scored the first two runs of the game in the opening inning. But from that point on, it was all UChicago as the team won its third-straight on the spring trip. The Maroons cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first when Jacqueline Ryan scored on an error. A three-run fourth inning put UChicago in control following a trio of run-scoring singles by Kathleen Kohm, Ryan and Kristin Lopez to go up 4-2. The Maroons added one more run in the fifth and three more in the sixth via singles from Maddie McManus, Kim Cygan, Vicky Tomaka and McManus again.
After allowing the two early runs, Cygan only allowed two more hits over her final six innings in the pitching circle. The senior ended up striking out 10 batters to go with four hits and four walks to earn the victory.
UChicago posted 14 hits as a team while committing one error. McManus and Lopez both went 3-for-4 at the plate, and Ryan added a 2-for-3 day.
Game Two - Buffalo State 9, UChicago 8
Despite scoring four times in the seventh inning, UChicago absorbed a one-run loss to Buffalo State. Trailing 9-4, the Maroons loaded the bases and Kaitlyn Carpenter brought them all in with a three-run double. Carpenter soon scored on a wild pitch, but the tying run was left stranded on third base.
Cygan helped UChicago to a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in her first at-bat, and the team added another run off an error in the third inning. Buffalo State turned the momentum around with four runs in the third and kept adding to its lead each subsequent inning. Jordan Poole doubled to center field to plate a pair of runners in the fifth to get UChicago within 5-4.
Lopez, Poole and Cygan all tallied three hits apiece, with Carpenter adding three RBI. The Maroons threw three pitchers and struggled defensively with six errors. Poole started the game and tossed four innings with six hits, three earned runs and four strikeouts. Emily Ashbridge followed with 2/3 innings of relief while allowing two unearned runs and two walks. Cygan pitched the last 1-1/3 innings and allowed three hits and two runs.
