UChicago softball splits doubleheader with 4-0 win and 3-2 loss versus Wheaton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago softball team picked up its fourth shutout of the year in winning game one 4-0, but Wheaton College responded with a 3-2 win in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Maroons ran their record to 13-11 while the Thunder are now 15-12 on the season.

Game One - Chicago 4, Wheaton 0

UChicago staked themselves to a 2-0 lead in the second inning courtesy of an RBI sacrifice fly by Maddie McManus and an RBI single down the third-base line by Vicky Tomaka. That was all the support starting pitcher Kim Cygan needed to get the win. The senior improved to 6-5 on the year by tossing six innings with a pitching line of six hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

Cygan's toughest inning proved to be the top of the fourth, with runners on second and third with one out. However, Cygan induced an infield pop-out and a swinging strikeout to keep Wheaton off the scoreboard.

The Maroons added to their lead in the fourth when Kristin Lopez knocked an RBI double down the left-field line. Zoe Oliver-Grey made it 4-0 in the fifth inning with an RBI single.

Emily Ashbridge threw the last inning in relief and benefitted from one of UChicago's two double plays on the day to preserve the shutout.

The Maroons finished with nine hits and five stolen bases. Lopez and Jordan Poole both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Kathleen Kohm swiped two bases while Lopez, Devan Parkison and Julia Covello stole one base each.

Game Two - Wheaton 3, Chicago 2

After a fruitless game one, Wheaton jumped ahead in the top of the first inning courtesy of a two-run homer to left center. UChicago threatened in the bottom of the first by loading the bases, but a strikeout ended the frame with the Thunder ahead 2-0.

The scenario repeated itself in the bottom of the third as the Maroons loaded the bases once again. Vicky Tomaka then poked an RBI single right over the second baseman's head to score one run. But Wheaton pitcher Danielle Schmidt struck out the next two batters to strand the bases loaded.

UChicago would tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on the corners, the Maroons successfully pulled off a double steal that saw Parkison slide safely into home plate ahead of the throw from second base.

Wheaton scored the winning run in the sixth inning thanks to a bases-loaded RBI single to shallow left field. UChicago's Poole (5-5) took the loss on the mound, throwing seven innings with six hits, three runs, two walks and one strikeout.

The Maroons totaled nine hits once again with one defensive error. Lopez went 3-for-4 at the plate and McManus was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. Jacqueline Ryan added a 2-for-4 day as well. UChicago stole three more bases, with one each from Ryan, Lopez and Parkison.
