Maroons softball swept by IWU 9-1 and 3-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The University of Chicago softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan University 9-1 and 3-0 on Saturday.

The No. 21-ranked Maroons fell to 19-5 and the No. 17-ranked Titans (28-5) ran their win streak to eight.

Game One – IWU 9, UChicago 1

The Maroons struck first in the top of the third inning. Sophomore outfielder Devan Parkison singled and then scored on an error. However, the Titans answered right back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of home runs to go up 3-1.

The home side broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth. IWU loaded the bases and came away with five runs on a double and two singles. One more run came through in the sixth on a throwing error to clinch the game 9-1.

Sophomore Jordan Poole (12-1) absorbed her first loss of the year in 3-1/3 innings. She allowed seven hits, eight runs (seven earned) and two walks to go with four strikeouts. Junior Emily Ashbridge tossed 1-2/3 innings with one hit, one unearned run and one walk.

UChicago's batters were held to four hits and the defense made three errors.

Game Two – IWU 3, UChicago 0

The Maroons had a chance to score in the top of the first inning by loading the bases. But no runs came around to score, and IWU swung the momentum back its way with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first. The Titans added two more runs in the second inning with a RBI single up the middle and a sacrifice fly.

Neither side was able to score the rest of the way and the game ended at 3-0. UChicago totaled seven hits and made one error. Senior third baseman Maddie McManus went 2-for-3 in the batter's box.

Junior pitcher Tabbetha Bohac (7-4) tossed all six innings for the Maroons, totaling five hits, three runs, three walks and one strikeout.
