Box Score 2 CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago softball team totaled 24 hits in Saturday's doubleheader, but stranded runners led to a split against Aurora University. UChicago won the first game 5-3 and Aurora won the second game 5-0.
The Maroons (11-1) lost their first game of the season to snap their 11-game win streak. The Spartans stand at 8-8 on the year.
Game One – UChicago 5, Aurora 3
UChicago sophomore pitcher Jordan Poole started in the pitching circle and gave herself a boost in the first inning with a RBI single to left field. She added another RBI single in the third inning to stake the home team to a 2-0 lead.
Aurora eventually tied the game 2-2 with solo home runs in both the fourth and sixth inning. But the Maroons came up clutch when it mattered in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Anna Woolery singled to score fellow freshman Maggie O'Hara to break the tie. Senior outfielder Kaitlyn Carpenter immediately followed with a RBI triple to center field, and senior third baseman Maddie McManus made it 5-2 with a single up the middle to plate Carpenter.
Down to their last three outs, the Spartans threatened in the seventh inning with a leadoff double that came around to score. But Poole came back with a strikeout and forced a fly out to end the game with the tying run on first base. Poole improved to 6-0 on the year, striking out nine batters in seven innings. She also allowed three runs on six hits with one walk.
Carpenter led UChicago with three hits in four plate appearances, along with one RBI. Poole was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Woolery hit 2-for-4 with one RBI and both sophomore Devan Parkison and sophomore Kathleen Kohm were 2-for-3.
Game Two – Aurora 5, UChicago 0
The Maroons threatened to score in each of the opening four innings. UChicago kept stroking hits and on two occasions loaded the bases with no outs. Unfortunately, the Maroons failed to score in both cases thanks to groundouts that threw out the lead runners at the plate. UChicago totaled 12 hits in the game, but couldn't break through on the scoreboard and stranded 13 runners on base.
Aurora made the most of its chances in the third inning by scoring four runs. The Spartans put together a triple, two doubles and a two-run homer in succession. Aurora added one more run in the fifth inning to split the day.
Junior pitcher Tabbetha Bohac (5-1) took the loss in seven innings. Bohac's pitching line included seven hits, five runs, one walk and four strikeouts. Sophomore Kristin Lopez, junior Raechel Cloud and McManus all hit 2-for-3 at the plate. Woolery and Kohm were both 2-for-4.
