CHICAGO, Ill. – Chris Mathis scored the game-winning goal in the final 10 minutes to give the University of Chicago men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Carthage College on Saturday.

The Maroons improved to 6-4-0. The Red Men dropped to 5-5-0.

Carthage controlled the action for much of the first half, intercepting UChicago passes and pressing up the other way. The Red Men held an 11-4 shot advantage in the half. But it was the home team that went into halftime with the lead in hand. In the 28th minute, senior midfielder Michael Choquette struck a free kick into the box and freshman midfielder Andre Abedian headed the ball in to go up 1-0.

The visitors struck back quickly in the second half. A cross from the right side went to the head of Michael Dombrowski, who evened the score in the 48th minute. Play evened up over the course of the second half with both teams getting behind the respective defenses for good looks at goal.

The game remained knotted until the 82nd minute. Sophomore defender Christian Belanger got the Maroons going on the counter attack up the left side, and then booted the ball up top to Mathis. The sophomore midfielder corralled the ball in traffic, set up his left foot and blasted the bouncing ball past the Carthage goalkeeper.

Both sides continued to get good looks all the way up until the final minute. However, it was UChicago that came out the victors. The Red Men outshot the Maroons 23-14 and also held a 7-4 edge on corner kicks. Freshman goalie Hill Bonin (4-1-0) made five saves with one goal allowed in his 90 minutes between the pipes. The five saves marked a new career high for Bonin.
