UChicago softball falls twice to Wheaton on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago softball team celebrated Senior Day on Thursday versus Wheaton College, and the visitors rallied back in the seventh inning of both games to beat the home team 5-4 and 6-4.

The Maroons dropped to 14-18 and the Thunder improved to 21-12.

Between games, UChicago honored its two seniors – pitcher/infielder Tabbetha Bohac and outfielder Katharine Hedlund. The senior class entered the day with a four-year record of 83-53 (.610 winning percentage) while making two NCAA postseason appearances.

Game One – Wheaton 5, UChicago 4

After several scoreless innings to start the day, the Maroons plated three runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore second baseman Anna Woolery knocked a RBI single to center field and then was part of a double steal with junior outfielder Devan Parkison. The steals paid off as sophomore outfielder Maggie O'Hara scored one on a groundout, and junior third baseman Kathleen Kohm recorded a RBI single herself.

Wheaton answered back with a two-run triple to right field in the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2. The two sides exchanged scores in the fifth and sixth – freshman first baseman Alyssa Stolmack bringing in one on a ground out and the Thunder drew a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, respectively.

The visitors struck once more in the top of the seventh to take the lead and get the win, 5-4. A double tied the score and Wheaton went ahead on an error.

UChicago ended up with 10 hits and two errors. O'Hara and Kohm both hit 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Junior starting pitcher Jordan Poole (6-8) threw a complete game and took the loss. Poole struck out nine batters to go with five runs (four earned), eight hits and two walks.

Game Two – Wheaton 6, UChicago 4

Once again in game two, the Maroons seized the early advantage. UChicago scored a RBI fielder's choice in the second inning, and then put up a trio of runs in the third frame. Parkison led off with a double and scored on Woolery's single to right. Kohm and Stolmack both singled up the middle to make it 4-0.

However, Wheaton got back on the comeback trail in the top of the fifth inning when the Thunder stroked a three-run home run. Down to their final outs in the seventh, the Thunder hit a two-run double down the left field line and added a RBI single to go up 6-4.

The Maroons totaled 10 hits and one error in the contest. Stolmack (one RBI) and Bohac each went 2-for-3 while Kohm hit 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Freshman pitcher Molly Moran (5-6) absorbed the loss after hurling all seven innings. Three of the six runs were unearned, and Moran's pitching line included eight hits, three walks and six strikeouts.
