Maroon softball falls twice at Hope

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HOLLAND, Mich. – The University of Chicago softball team lost a doubleheader at Hope College 5-3 and 11-3 on Monday.

The Maroons evened their season record at 9-9 while the Flying Dutch improved to 18-4.

Game One – Hope 5, UChicago 3

Starting junior pitcher Jordan Poole gave herself some run support in the top of the second inning when she stroked a RBI single to center field to put the Maroons up 1-0. However, Hope answered back with two runs in the third inning and one run in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead.

UChicago tied up the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth. Junior outfielder Devan Parkison singled, stole second base and scored on sophomore outfielder Anna Woolery's single. Woolery came around to score the very next batter when sophomore shortstop Maggie O'Hara laced a double.

Once again, the home team rallied back in its own half of the sixth. A fielder's choice and a single to center field gave the Flying Dutch the winning runs.

Poole (4-3) absorbed the loss in six innings of work. She totaled five runs (four earned) on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. UChicago tallied six hits and two errors in the contest.

Game Two – Hope 11, UChicago 3

The Maroons knocked 15 hits in game two and got on the scoreboard in the first inning. Junior third baseman Kathleen Kohm singled to center to drive in Woolery. The Flying Dutch broke out in the bottom of the frame with a grand slam and a solo home run back-to-back to seize control of the proceedings.

Parkison provided the next two runs for UChicago with a RBI single in the second inning and a RBI double in the fourth innings. But Hope kept rolling on offense and ended the game in the sixth inning on a three-run home run.

Senior Tabbetha Bohac (2-2) was the losing pitcher after hurling one inning with five runs, four hits and three walks. Freshman Molly Moran threw 4-2/3 innings of relief with six runs, nine hits and one strikeout.

Parkison led the offense by going 4-for-4 at the plate and Woolery hit 3-for-5. O'Hara, Moran and freshman first baseman Alyssa Stolmack all collected two hits apiece.
