ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The University of Chicago men's tennis team lost its third-place match to Carnegie Mellon University 5-4 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday.
The No. 5-ranked Maroons dropped to 15-5. The No. 8-ranked Tartans improved to 16-6.
UChicago was No. 2 seed in the eight-team conference tournament while Carnegie Mellon was the No. 5 seed.
The Maroons went up 2-1 after doubles with a big comeback at the No. 3 position by sophomore Luke Tsai and junior Max Hawkins, who won 9-7. Freshman Charlie Pei and sophomore Peter Leung handily took their No. 2 doubles match 8-3.
In singles play, Tsai nearly shut out his opponent at No. 6 by scores of 6-1, 6-0. Junior Sven Kranz also came through with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 4. However, Carnegie Mellon took the other four matches to earn the one-point team victory.
