Maroon softball loses doubleheader at IWU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The University of Chicago softball team had its six-game winning streak snapped with a pair of losses at No. 12-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University on Tuesday.

The Maroons dropped to 23-8 while the Titans improved to 29-8.

Game One – IWU 3, UChicago 1

The opening five innings were mostly uneventful as both pitchers threw up zeros on the scoreboard. But the home side eventually cracked the contest open in the bottom of the sixth. After two quick outs and a walk, an error kept IWU's inning alive and the Titans made it count. An RBI single through the right side plated the first run and a two-run single two batters later made it 3-0.

In the top of the seventh, senior first base Kathleen Kohm knocked a solo bomb over the center field fence to make it 3-1. But IWU soon ended the inning without any further damage.

Senior pitcher Jordan Poole (7-4 record) took the loss in six innings. Her pitching line included three unearned runs, three hits, three walks and two strikeouts. UChicago was limited to three hits and made two errors on defense.

Game Two – IWU 6, UChicago 3

Kohm swung a big bat right away in the first inning of game two when she cracked another solo homer to right center – her fourth home run of the season. IWU answered back in the bottom half with a RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game.

A pair of RBI singles by the Titans put them ahead 3-1 in the third inning. UChicago then evened it back up two innings later in the fifth. Junior designated player Anna Woolery singled and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt, then scored when freshman outfielder Serena Moss pulled a double down the right field line. Senior outfielder Devan Parkison was next and she singled to center field for the RBI.

IWU came right back with back-to-back home runs to begin the bottom half of the frame. An RBI double a few batters later accounted for the final 6-3 score.

The Maroons collected eight hits and committed three more errors. Parkison and Woolery both went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Sophomore Molly Moran (8-4 record) gave up her first earned runs in her past four appearances. She went four innings with five runs, eight hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Freshman Jordyne Prussak relieved for the last two innings, totaling one run, three hits, one walk and one strikeout.
