UChicago softball beats St. Olaf, falls to Wisconsin-Oshkosh

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Chicago softball team broke out the bats against St. Olaf College but weren't able to extend that offense against University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday.

The Maroons ran their season record to 3-1. The Oles dropped to 5-4 and the Titans improved to 8-3.

Game One – UChicago 12, St. Olaf 4

Maggie O'Hara's torrid hitting streak helped UChicago go up big quickly on St. Olaf. The senior third base totaled four RBI in Saturday's doubleheader, and then equaled that total in the opening two innings on Sunday. Her RBI double in the first inning got things rolling and then capped the second inning with a three-run homer to center field.

The six-run second inning also featured RBI singles by freshman designated player Christie Ambrose and senior second base Anna Woolery. The Oles struck back in the bottom of the third, scoring four unearned runs with two outs to cut the deficit to 7-4.

However, the Maroons put the result to bed with five more in the top of the sixth. A double steal allowed Woolery to cross home plate, and sophomore first base Carly Schulz rocked a two-run triple shortly afterwards. A sacrifice fly and RBI groundout by freshmen Danielle Allen and Holli Jones, respectively, closed out the scoring.

Sophomore pitcher Jordyne Prussak started in the circle and improved to 2-0 with her six-inning appearance. She struck out four and walked one with three hits. All four runs were unearned.

Offensively, the Maroons pounded out 17 hits as six players had multiple base-knocks. Sophomore outfielder Maeve Garvey led the way by going 4-for-4, while O'Hara went 3-for-3 with four RBI. Woolery was 3-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore outfielder Serena Moss, Allen and Ambrose all tallied two hits each.

Game Two – Wisconsin-Oshkosh 3, UChicago 1

The Maroon offense was held in check against the Titans in the second game of the day. UChicago was limited to five hits in the game as Wisconsin-Oshkosh effectively stifled scoring opportunities.

UChicago got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth. Woolery's single and Garvey's double led off the frame, and O'Hara brought in one with a sacrifice fly to right field. But the Titans struck out the next two batters to end the threat.

UWO scored twice in the top of the fifth to capture the lead and added an insurance tally in the seventh to gain the 3-1 win.

Junior Molly Moran (1-1) took the loss as the starting pitcher. She went 4.2 innings with two runs on six hits while striking out five. Freshman Megan Stoppelman tossed the final 2.1 innings, with one run on three hits, two walks and one strikeout.
