UChicago softball drops a pair to Tufts and MIT

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – In the final games of the Florida spring trip, the University of Chicago softball team absorbed losses to Tufts University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday.

The Maroons will return home with a 7-4 record.

Game One – Tufts 3, UChicago 1

The two teams exchanged runs in the second inning and the score remained tied at 1-1 for much of the contest. UChicago scored when junior catcher Sara Koniewicz knocked a RBI single to center field.

Tufts held the Maroon offense in check from there, only surrendering two more hits over the final five innings. Then the Jumbos tallied two in the top of the sixth with a double to go up 3-1.

A walk and a single had UChicago threatening in the bottom of the seventh, but a fielder's choice ended the game.

UChicago totaled four hits and made two errors defensively. Freshman first base Holli Jones hit 2-for-3 at the plate.

Freshman Megan Stoppelman made the start, pitching 5.1 innings. She struck out four batters while allowing one run on four hits with two walks. Junior Molly Moran (3-2 record) took the loss in 1.2 innings of relief, with two runs, two hits, one walk and one strikeout.

Game Two – MIT 13, UChicago 5

The day's second game was a back-and-forth affair throughout. After three innings, the score was knotted at 4-4. Sophomore outfielder Serena Moss brought in the first run on a single in the first inning. UChicago loaded the bases in the top of the third with no outs and scored three times. A fielding error and a pair of RBI singles by sophomore pitcher Jordyne Prussak and freshman outfielder Christie Ambrose did the damage.

MIT pulled back ahead with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth, and UChicago was poised to answer in the top of the sixth. The Maroons loaded the bases with no outs thanks to two singles and a walk. Sophomore outfielder Maeve Garvey recorded a RBI groundout, but two subsequent groundouts ended the frame with UChicago trailing 7-5. The Beavers proceeded to plate six more runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game at 13-5.

UChicago knocked nine hits but committed a season-high five errors. Freshman catcher Danielle Allen, senior second base Anna Woolery and Ambrose all tallied two hits each.

Stoppelman (3 ER, 10 H, 3 BB, 3 K) took the loss over 3.2 innings of relief. Prussak (3 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 1 K) tossed the opening two innings.
