Maroon softball concludes season at NCAA Regional

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DECORAH, Iowa – The University of Chicago softball team bowed out of the NCAA Regional with a pair of losses to Luther College and St. Catherine University on Saturday.

The Maroons ended their season with a 26-14 record, which is tied for the third-most season wins in program history. The No. 3-ranked Norse (41-3) will take on the No. 25-ranked Wildcats (33-12) in the regional championship.

At the weekend's conclusion, UChicago had two players named to the All-Regional Team - junior pitcher Molly Moran and freshman shortstop Emma Nelson.

Game One – Luther 6, UChicago 0

The high-powered Luther offense made its presence felt immediately with a quintet of runs in the opening inning. Two singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with no outs. A walk and a sacrifice fly brought in two scores before a three-run homer to right field broke the game open.

The Norse would add one more tally in the top of the seventh to account for the final score. The Maroons was kept at bay throughout the contest and were limited to three hits.

Junior pitcher Molly Moran took the complete-game loss to run her record to 11-7.

Game Two – St. Catherine 5, UChicago 2

One day after getting shutout by the Maroons in the NCAA opener, the Wildcats generated three runs in the first two innings. UChicago put a pair of runners in scoring position in the second inning, which included a double by freshman designated player Danielle Allen. But the offense was held off the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh inning.

A pair of RBI singles in the top of the fifth expanded St. Catherine's lead to 5-0. UChicago eventually broke through in its final at-bats in the seventh. An infield error brought one run across, followed by a RBI fielder's choice from sophomore second base Colleen Bennett. The final score would stand at 5-2.

The Maroons totaled five hits and made one error. Freshman shortstop Emma Nelson went 2-for-2 with a walk, and Allen was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Freshman pitcher Megan Stoppelman closed out her debut campaign with a 12-5 record as she threw all seven innings.
