UChicago Softball Goes 1-1 at Lake Forest

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Junior outfielder Maeve Garvey's go-ahead home run in extra innings allowed the University of Chicago softball team to split a doubleheader at Lake Forest College on Monday.

The Maroons moved to 8-6 and the Foresters ran their record to 10-6.

Game One – UChicago 3, Lake Forest 2

The host Foresters drew ahead 2-0 with a fielder's choice RBI in the second inning and RBI single in the third inning. After that point, UChicago starting pitcher Molly Moran locked in and kept LFC off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

She got support from the offense in the top half of the fourth. A pair of unearned runs came across with two outs. Garvey and first-year outfielder Abby Hayes executed an effective double steal as Garvey reached home safely. Then senior designated player Sara Koniewicz drove a RBI single up the middle to tie the game.

The game eventually went to extra innings, where Garvey struck with a solo homer to center field in the top of the eighth. UChicago went on to load the bases with one out, but the Foresters escaped the jam with no further damage.

Moran (3-3 record) shut the door after that. The senior hurler sent the three batters down in order and ended the contest by retiring 11 in-a-row. Her pitching line featured two runs, four hits, one walk and a season-high seven strikeouts over the course of eight innings.

The Maroons tallied eight hits and four stolen bases. First-year infielder Skye Collins went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Game Two – Lake Forest 6, UChicago 4

Lake Forest's offense in game two was steady throughout. After a scoreless first, the hosts tallied at least one run in every subsequent inning.

UChicago grabbed a 3-1 advantage in the third inning. With runners in scoring position, junior outfielder Serena Moss pulled a two-run single down the right field line. Moss would then get sacrificed to second base, reached third on a passed ball and scored on the catcher's throwing error.

The visitors were down 4-3 in the sixth when Collins recorded a sacrifice fly to plate Garvey. However, LFC quickly responded with a RBI double and RBI single in the bottom half of the frame.

UChicago was limited to five hits, with first-year catcher Gabi Angelloti going 2-for-3.

Junior Jordyne Prussak got the start in the pitching circle. She went five innings with four runs, six hits and two walks. Sophomore Megan Stoppelman (1-3 record) took the loss in one inning of relief. She allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout.
