Maroon Volleyball Tops MSOE; Falls to Concordia-Wisconsin to Cap Carthage Classic

KENOSHA, Wis. – The University of Chicago volleyball team saw its win streak come to an end, but the Maroons responded with a big sweep to cap a 3-1 weekend at the Carthage College Classic Saturday.

The Maroons (11-1) dropped its first match in a 3-1 decision to Concordia-Wisconsin, 25-22, 20-25, 19-25, 20-25, but then took down Milwaukee School of Engineering in three, 25-16, 25-15, 25-18.

UChicago sophomore setter Emma Griffith and junior middle Madison Pearson were both named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts, as UChicago defeated #19 Carthage and Saint Mary's (Minn.) Friday.

 

CONCORDIA-WISCONSIN 3, UCHICAGO 1
The Maroons opened the match with a tight Set 1 victory, but couldn't get the edge in the final three sets to drop their first contest of the season.  

Setter Emma Griffith (48 assists) distributed to ball evenly throughout the UChicago attack, as Audrey Scrafford and Madison Pearson each had 10 kills to lead the way. First-year Julianna Kalil added eight kills and three more players had seven each: Anabella Pinton, Sarah Muisenga and Audra Berg.

CWU was on fire at the net in the fourth set, hitting for a .367 percentage while holding the Maroons to .158. The Falcons (6-2) didn't make things easy up front, finishing with 12 block assists and two solo blocks, compared to just one solo block (Berg) for UChicago.

Kalil was the most consistent hitter for UChicago, swinging for .462 with her eight kills on 13 attacks.

Griffith added three service aces and nine digs and three players had double-digit defensive numbers, led by Muisenga (23 digs). Katherine Wilson and Anne Marie Stifter had 19 and 12 digs, respectively.

 

UCHICAGO 3, MSOE 0
The Maroons responded from their earlier setback with a blistering win over the Engineers (5-8), holding them below 20 points in all three sets.

UChicago swung for a stellar .400 attack percentage, led by 11 kills from Scrafford (.550) and eight from Stifter (.400). Griffith delivered 37 assists and added 10 digs and Wilson (14 digs) and Stifter (12 digs) led the defense.

The Maroons made up for seven service errors with seven service aces, as Griffith finished with three and Pearson had two.

The offense was again spread out, as Fredericka Paulson (six kills), Mikayla Hardy (six kills), and Pearson (five kills) joined in on the action.
