Box Score CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's soccer team absorbed a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Brandeis University on the Stagg Field turf on Friday.
The No. 16-ranked Maroons fell to 8-4-1 on the year and 1-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Judges moved to 4-6-2 overall and 1-1-1 in UAA contests.
UChicago had the run of play throughout the matchup and made consistent forays deep into Brandeis territory. The visitors bunkered down defensively and looked for counterattacks when the opportunity presented itself.
The Maroons were particularly adept at earning set pieces throughout the early evening. All told, the home side attempted 12 corner kicks compared to zero for Brandeis. UChicago whipped the ball into the box with aplomb on the great majority of the corners and had numerous close-call headers. Junior Naz Kabbani had one of the most notable chances when his header bounced off the right post at the 25:35 mark.
The two sides traded chances off the post in the second half. The Judges hit the woodwork in the 76th minute, followed by junior Kameron Bloye's left-footed shot in the box that found the right post.
The deciding play occurred with 2:19 left in regulation. A UChicago clearance attempt went awry as a defender mistakenly passed the ball to Brandeis forward Max Horowitz at the left corner of the box. Horowitz promptly launched a wide-open blast from 17 yards away to provide the game winner.
The Maroons owned a 19-9 lead in shots to go with their 12-0 corner kick margin. Senior goalkeeper Calvin Walters (6-4-1 record) collected three saves with one goal allowed.
